Candidate for PPPA PRESIDENT - Mike Carroll

Mike has a keen interest in seeing PPPA continue to be a positive force in creating an interest in Pickleball in Colorado Springs and El Paso County. He sees PPPA as entering a new phase. Its fantastic growth has created the enviable challenge of how to take it to a new level. Working with the city in a cooperative partnership to provide more playing venues may be one of PPPA’s biggest challenges. Finding ways to provide more structured playing time for those new to pickleball and for advanced players to enhance their game is equally as important. Going forward he wants to see PPPA as a more proactive and visible organization within the community, working with city government and other organizations to further the sport.

In his business career he managed several different organizations. He was responsible for growing these organizations, which requires organizational skill and the ability to work with diverse groups of people with varied interests. He believes if an organization is not moving forward it is losing ground. This is a fundamental management philosophy for him, but he knows it is important to remember “if it is not broken don’t try and fix it.” Mike has been a PPPA member for 2 years, helped manage the Rocky Mountain State Games for the past 2 years, led the 2.0-3.0 Round Robin team for the past two years, completed the PPPA referee training program, and helped prepare the City LART grant report, which made him keenly aware of the significant positive economic and social impact pickleball has on Colorado Springs. His work in the non-profit sector has taught him that community visibility and support are critical to sustaining an organization.

Candidate for PPPA PRESIDENT - Peter Fleming

Peter is passionate about pickleball, impressed with the PPPA management and its membership, and wants to advance the cause and reputation of the organization. He has a Bachelor's degree in Oral Communications and a Doctorate of Law. Peter also has 13 years’ experience as a Certified Financial Planner. He was a member of the Atlanta Estate Planning Council nonprofit organization for 21 years serving on its Board of Directors for 4 years. Most recently, he has also served on the Board of Directors of the TIH Ministries nonprofit organization for the past 6 years.

Peter is enthusiastic to bring his organizational and planning skills to the PPPA. Peter played tennis for over 20 years serving as a metro-Atlanta team captain for several seasons and has played pickleball for almost 2 years. As a member of PPPA for the last year, he volunteered in 2017 as a trained pickleball Line Judge in PPPA tournaments.

Peter's communications, legal, and financial background, combined with his prior extensive nonprofit Board of Directors experience of 10 years, will allow him to serve effectively and immediately in this key PPPA leadership position as President of our Association.

Candidate for PPPA PRESIDENT - Joseph Johnson

Joe Johnson is very interested in, and qualified for, the position of President for the PPPA. Coming from the tennis community, he formed, and served as President of an all-volunteer nonprofit 501(3c) tennis association, the Colorado Springs Community Tennis Association (CSCTA). The CSCTA mission focused primarily on raising funds to provide tennis court maintenance for all public courts within the city. He directed efforts to obtain grants, form fundraisers and obtain private donations. Joe created a presentation for the Parks and Recreation Department that cataloged the conditions of all public tennis courts in the city, which prompted the city to take action and provide the funds to upgrade the Memorial Park Tennis facility. The upgrade of Memorial Park gave the tennis players in town a top-notch public facility that eased the tension between the Tennis players and the growing Pickleball community, thus allowing the Monument Valley Park courts to become solely dedicated for Pickleball.

Joe is a retired US Army veteran. As Non Commissioned Officer In Charge (NCOIC) of various units he managed 100-150 soldiers in support of their mission activities. He feels his organizational skills and ability to multitask would be an asset in the PPPA position. He has contributed his abilities and skills to the development of the game throughout the city, volunteering his help in clinics and assisting with the coordination and facilitation of tournaments. He provided pickleball lessons as fund raising efforts for our local tournaments. He spends numerous hours teaching and promoting the sport. As the Point of Contact for the National Places To Play program for Colorado Springs, he is the first person to receive contact from pickleball players and enthusiasts who are visiting our area, providing information to them on just where they can get a good game while here in Colorado Springs. He has been a member of PPPA for 3 years.
