ROUND ROBIN PLAY 

ROUND ROBIN PLAY is active nearly year-round for members of the PPPA. It is broken out into skill levels 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0 and is by RESERVATION ONLY through Sign-Up Genius.  See details below and on the calendar!  Starting times for the Round Robins vary. They will finish when all games have been completed.  In general, this will be approximately 2 hours after they start.

In order to participate:

• You must be a current PPPA member in good standing.
• You may only be a member of one RR group at a time.
• You may only play in your group's RRs.
• You can only reserve a position one week in advance.
• You can play in only one RR per week.  
• All participants need to stay for all 6-7 games.
  
• You must wear your PPPA nametag to check-in for every round robin.
  
• You may split your position with another player ONLY IF 
• • they are a member of the PPPA,
  • they are a member of the group you are playing in,
  • they are not playing in another round robin the same week, and 
  • you have received prior approval from your Round Robin Coordinator.

SignUpGenius

RRs are limited to 8-39 players, first come, first serve.  We have implemented the use of SignUpGenius for our Round Robin program.  Please create a free Signup Genius account if you do not already have one.  The user id should be the email address you provide to your coordinator.  It will be used to add you to the Round Robin group. It will also be used to send you messages via Signup Genius.

You must add two contacts for SignUp Genius to your contacts list for your email provider in order to receive communication from SignUp Genius!  Your coordinator will send you an invite weekly.  If you are not in a group list, send an email to the coordinator for your skill level and they can add you to their group (you must be a PPPA member and have a unique email ID).  To move to a new group, email your current group coordinator and the coordinator of your desired group and request the change.  

Round Robin Description

A “Round Robin” is a structured form of play organized by skill levels. During the Round Robin session, you will play a number of games, each potentially with a different partner and against a different pair of opponents. It is designed so that all players are playing against people of roughly equal ability, which makes play fun and reasonably competitive for the majority of players. Games are to 11 points, win by 1.

Round Robins consist of 6-7 games depending on the number of participants who show up to play. We make every effort to start on time out of respect for your time. We ask that you arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the round robin to facilitate this. Players who arrive late may lose their spot in the round robin.  We also do what we can to keep the round robin moving along so that it ends within a reasonable amount of time - 2 hours to 2 hours 15 minutes. 

Occasionally, we find that 7 or 8 courts complete their game faster than the last one or two. If those last two courts are nearing game completion, we allow the game to play out. However, if the score is still low and the game looks like it will continue for a noticeable length of time, we need to speed up the game. Having 31 - 35 people standing around waiting for the last 4-8 can become frustrating.

Rally Scoring

To get the round robin moving again, we will ask the remaining courts to go to rally scoring. By this we mean "continue to play the game almost exactly the same as always. Everyone still has their opportunity to serve, return, etc.  Score is still called in the same manner.  However, every serve of the ball will now result in a point for one of the two participating teams. Whichever team was the last to successfully serve or return the ball prior to a fault will increase their score by one." 

Participant Skill Levels

Pease be sure of your skill level when deciding to participate in a RR. If you are unsure of your rating, you can use this guide to help you determine your skill level. 

There is also a national Pickleball Rating System called DUPR. This downloadable or phone app is offered free of charge for all Pickleball players. You enter your information and can sign in to enter your scores against the other players. This is strictly for informational use and might help you track your level of play.  It may help you to decide when it is time to change levels. Check it out at:  mydupr.com  

Winter Break

Round robins will take a winter break.  Generally speaking, the break will be from Mid-November until a few days past New Years Day.

Cancelation of the Round Robin

Coordinators will cancel the Round Robin either prior to the start or during play if the coordinator deems conditions to be unsafe.

Unsafe conditions include:

1. Courts that are wet, icy or snowy

2. Temperatures or wind chill of below 45 degrees

3. Thunder or lightning within 6 miles of the courts

4. Wind speeds of 20 mph or higher

5. Weather forecasts that predict any of the above.

The coordinator should keep in mind that they are cancelling the round robin in the interests of player safety. Players are certainly still able to make the choice to play on their own if they disagree. 

Operational Details

• Check-in times vary depending on the round robin. See below.  
• All participants need to stay for all 6(or 7) games.  
• RR is by RESERVATION ONLY! 
• Participants who show up late will lose their place in the round robin.
  
• *Anyone who signs up to play and then does not show up and does not notify their coordinators, will not be eligible to play the following week.
• Upon arrival at the pickleball courts, proceed to the check-in point. Make note of your number then check your name off of the roster. Play, play, play!  
• The Round Robin On-Site Coordinators have adopted a standard practice which can be viewed here.

ROUND ROBINS HELD AT MONUMENT VALLEY PARK

***Please note that access to the MVP Pickleball Courts is controlled by Colorado Springs Parks and Rec.  The gates will be locked when the city determines that the playing surface is unsafe. Please respect their right to protect their courts and the warranty for those courts.  Do not use the courts if the sign by the parking lot says that they are closed.

PPPA 2.0 Round Robin

When:  Mondays at 2 PM* You must arrive by 1:45 PM. 

Where:  Monument Valley Park, Courts 7-15

Who:   2.0-2.5 players.   Most players have attended at least one beginning lesson and participated in Guided Play and/or have played for at least 1-2 months.  This is for beginning players who have some basic skills and understanding of the game.

Who:   2.5-3.0 players.   Most players have attended lessons and participated in Guided Play and/or have played for 2-6 months, know how to keep score and can serve, return serves and do some dinking.

When:  Wednesdays at 2 PM*

Where:  Monument Valley Park, Courts 7-15

Who:  3.0-3.5 players.  Most players will have generally been playing for a minimum of a year and have a solid grasp of serve, return of serve, dinking, volleys, lobs, third shot drop and may have played in tournaments.

When:  Tuesdays at 2 PM*. 

Where:  Monument Valley Park, Courts 7-15

Who:  Solid 3.5 - 4.0 players.  Player demonstrates a broad knowledge of the rules and strategies of the game and has a fairly consistent serve, return of serve, use of drop shots, dinks and volleys.  The player hits a low number of unforced errors per game.
